The Best of France and Argentina

Bodegas Caro

Posted on June 11th, 2013

In a recent offer we highlighted famous Bordeaux producer Domaines Barons de Rothschild's Chilean label, Vina Los Vascos. We explained the appeal Chile has to producers who seek an arena for winemaking where laws are less strict than those of France's AOC. That Chile has such a draw makes it perfectly sensible that next door neighbor Argentina would catch some attention as well. Like Chile, Argentina possesses prime land for a variety of grapes also found in the Rothschild family's native Bordeaux, while allowing similar flexibility when it comes to technique and blending.

The Rothschild's Argentinian venture is a partnership between the family and Argentina's famed winemaking family, the Catenas. The two powerhouses joined forces in the late 1990s to create Bodegas Caro (a blend of the two family names), focused on producing wine that represents the Rothschild's expertise in Cabernet Sauvignon and the Catena's expertise in Malbec (as well as the terroir of Mendoza). The year 2000 marked the first vintage of their top-tier Cabernet/Malbec blend "Caro", followed soon after by its less expensive younger brother "Amancaya" and more recently "Aruma", the winery's only 100% Malbec bottling.

Today's offer presents the opportunity to experience the entire line-up from Bodegas Caro, a joint venture of two of the most revered families in the business.

2011 Bodegas Caro "Aruma" - $14.99 (Warehouse pick-up: $12.99 warehouse pickup)

2011 marks the second vintage of Bodegas Caro's single varietal bottling of Malbec. A lovely nose of strawberry and raspberry along with floral notes and a hint of vanilla lead to a well-balanced palate, soft but full-bodied with a well-rounded finish.

2010 Bodegas Caro "Amancaya" - $18.99 (Warehouse pick-up: $16.99)

A blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Amancaya shows raspberries, dark currant and plum on the nose, along with subtle oak nuances of chocolate and spices. The palate is round and lush, with a mouthful of fruit and a delightfully spicy finish.

2009 Bodegas Caro "Caro" - $51.99 (Warehouse pick-up: $48.99)

The signature wine of Bodegas Caro, the Caro is a rich and full-bodied blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. A nose of red fruit, mocha and spice leads to a dense palate with lasting intensity. Still in its youth, the Caro will continue to evolve and can be aged for 10-15 years.
