Drink Anytime the Sun Shines

Posted on June 26th, 2013

Washington winemaker Javier Alfonso is doing some wonderful things with his small production label, Idilico. A side project to his Woodinville winery, Pomum, Idilico is the only winery in Washington focused solely on Spanish varietals. Because the production is so small, Javier does not seek attention through critical acclaim, opting instead to rely on word of mouth, keep his prices low, and let the wine speak for itself.

We had the pleasure of meeting Javier at a tasting a few years back when he released the first vintage of Idilico. A native of Spain, Javier expressed great passion toward working with Spanish varietals grown in his now home state of Washington. His contagious charm and spirit were an added bonus to the pleasure in tasting what was poured from each bottle of Idilico sampled and we've been loyal consumers ever since.

If you've not yet had the pleasure of experiencing what Javier is producing with native Spanish varietals grown in Washington state vineyards, don't pass on this opportunity! These wines are perfect for summer and with such small production in circulation, may not be available for long!

2012 Idilico Albarino - $15.99 ($13.99 warehouse pick-up)

From Dutchman Vineyard in the Yakima Valley (one of three vineyards in the state with Albarino plantings), Idilico Albarino showcases the characteristic aromas of this white varietal with floral notes, citrus and tropical fruit on the nose. The palate is incredibly sippable, though not delicate, with crisp acid and minerality mingled in with citrus notes. A recent sampling revealed the slightest hint of black licorice on the finish. An absolute perfect match for seafood this summer - oysters, clams, mussels, prawns and any kind of ceviche. Or, as Javier states: "Drink anytime the sun shines."

2010 Idilico Tempranillo - $18.99 ($16.99 warehouse pick-up)

Included in Javier's Tempranillo sources within the state (Elerding, Upland and Airport Ranch) are clones of the varietal imported from Spain and tended to just for the Idilico label. Dark cherry and blueberry fruit on the nose is complimented by Tempranillo's signature rustic tobacco notes. Rich, but restrained on the palate, juicy berry notes are balanced with a smoky finish. Smoked and barbecued meats make for an outstanding pairing with this wine. 120 cases produced.
